Raymond Matte studied the 2¢ Carmine quite extensively.
He examined "approximately 2 million" of the just over 3 billion stamps printed and found many constant plate varieties.
From 1975 to 1977, he self published three handbooks of hand drawn marks on diagrams showing the nature of these CPVs.
Most of the stamps illustrated in this section are from his personal collection. Some of these CPVs have since been plated. the the "Matte" number is present on each page as well.
