"Marks in C, in the left margin below left centre, inside the frame, in both numeral boxes and in TWO..NTS."
Leo's Notes
Re-entry (in Marler)
- Marks in the left margin from midpoint to leaf 3. The most distinctive is an arc opposite the top of leaf 3 and the bottom of leaf 4.
- Marks in left outer oval opposite leaf 4.
- Many marks in both numeral boxes. Among them are two vertical dashes side-by-side to the right of the 2 in the RNB.
- Marks in TWO and TS in CENTS.
Similar re-entry on 14UL28.
Retouch not in Marler and not on proof; the plate was retouched after proof was printed.
- Top two lines in the UL spandrel are retouched from the crown to the right edge of the spandrel.
- The lines appear to touch above the base of the cross.
This stamp is fascinating. Marler describes a re-entry on this stamp and most of what he describes is on the stamp illustrated. However, Marler does not describe the obvious retouch to the top two lines above the right crown. He doesn't describe it because it isn't on the plate proof. Plate 14 is one of the plates where a nick at the right edge of the top frame was eliminated on all subjects after the plate proof was made. It appears this plate was reworked in two stages:
- Stage 1 - re-entries were made before the plate proof was printed
- Stage 2 - the plate was extensively retouched after the plate proof was printed
The stamp is design type O5. This is not obvious on the first stamp because of the postmark. However, on the second copy of this stamp illustrated, the area around the RNB is free of postmarks, and reveals that the stamp is design type O5. Unfortunately, the postmark falls on top of the retouch to the UR and obscures it.
