A retouch of the vertical line in the upper right from above line 2 to about line 15. The retouched vertical line is quite thick at the top and the 2nd horizontal line appears to extend through it.
Leo's Notes
- Nearly vertical scratch in the right margin opposite the crown.
- The scratch begins in the top margin and is faint opposite AGE.
I have "tentatively" identified the position as 14LL10. Why "tentative"? The proof shows the scratch in exactly the same shape and position. That's how I identified the stamp position. However, the proof shows neither the retouch nor the guide dot. That the retouch is missing is understandable. All the retouches to plate 14 were made after the proof was printed.
The absence of the guide dot is harder to understand. I would have expected all the guide dots to be on the plate by the time the proof was made. After all, at this point, everything on the plate has been laid down. So, why a guide dot after the proof was printed? What purpose did the guide dot serve?
