7¢ Bistre 2R98

Doubling in the right inner oval under the GE and an interesting notch where the horizontal traverses the inner oval just below the 'E' and the vertical  is composed of at least two lines; the shorter and stronger is to the left, very near the portrait oval, while the longer starts at the colour band and is on a diagonal, sloping to the left. There is a small portion of a guide line in the top portion of the left arm of the 'N' of Canada.

Leo's Notes

Re-entry (not in Marler)

  • Doubling in the right inner oval near right border from the right edge of G to right side of E.
Notch just below the E and well below the doubling.
  • Horizontal line plus two vertical lines. The left one is higher than the right and is on left side of oval. The right one is in the middle of oval.
Faint vertical guideline in top margin above the middle of the right side of the left crown. Short vertical dash (guideline remnant) in upper left corner of N in CANADA.

Re-entry in Zone 16
Plate Position: 2R98
Not listed in Marler
Sheet Format
Notch Type: RBL

On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."

In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
