7¢ Bistre 2R86

"Doubling inside the frame opposite E and of the oval band below GE and inside right centre, with a guide dot touching the left side of the portrait". There is a notch below the doubling with the horizontal just above the bottom of the 'E' and the vertical starting to the right of centre.

Comments

Marler did not 'appreciate' the "Notch" in the right inner oval. It appears that he considered it part of the larger re-entering. The horizontal component is centred to the right just at the base of the 'E' and the vertical component slopes from right to left starting under the middle of the horizontal arm.

Leo's Notes

Re-entry (in Marler)

  • a) Doubling in right inner oval from right edge of G to right edge of E.
  • b) Small line near the end of bottom arm of the E.
  • c) Doubling in right outer oval opposite right side of E.
Strong notch even with the end of the E
  • Thick horizontal line, strong vertical line at centre, and second faint vertical line to the LR of the first.

On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."

In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
