Strong notch showing the horizontal just below the bottom of the 'E' and the vertical slightly to the right in the inner white oval. A clear guide line through the left crown, NA and in the inner oval slightly below C.

  • The horizontal line goes from the right side of the oval to the right border. 
  • There is one vertical line in the right side of the oval. It has a weak spot in the middle.

 Faint vertical guideline in the top margin above the left crown (very faint), in the left inner oval at the left edge of the crown, in the upper left part of the N, and in the lower right part of the first A.Two faint vertical guidelines in the LNB. One goes through the middle of the 7 and the other goes through the right part of the 7, near the right edge.

On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."

In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
