7¢ Bistre 2R33

A faint notch with the horizontal about half way up the 'E' in the inner white oval and the vertical slightly right of the centre of the inner oval. There is a strong vertical guide line in the centre of the left inner oval cuts the 'N' and the left '7'. There is a 2nd guideline in the LNB.

Leo's Notes

Notch opposite middle of the E

  • Vertical line is in the middle of the oval.

Dot in the middle of the top arm of the E.Three vertical guidelines.

  • a) The rightmost one starts in the top margin above the right side of the left crown and ends in the crown.
  • b) The middle one goes through upper left part of the N, the bottom right of the A, the left inner oval, the left side of leaf 1, the right edge of the 7, and ends at the bottom frame. It is strongest in the N and the oval.
  • c) The leftmost one is in the LNB. It goes through the right half of the 7.

Flaw in Zone 16

Sheet Format
Notch Type: NAR

On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."

In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
