7¢ Bistre 2L72

A medium strength notch with the horizontal well above the bottom of the 'E' and the vertical in the centre of the inner oval. There is a strong guideline just touching the top left of the left '7' and a guide dot just touching the inside of the frame at left centre.

Leo's Notes

Notch above the right edge of the E

  • One horizontal line. Goes from middle of oval to right border.
  • Two vertical lines: the top one divided in two segments at the centre of the oval, and the bottom one barely visible close to the right border.
Dot below the horizontal member of the 7 in the LNB.Tiny dot in the right part of the top arm of the E in POSTAGE.Strong vertical guideline in the LNB.
  • It goes through the LNB and into the bottom margin to the right of the 7.
  • The guideline continues into 2L9/2.

Flaw in Zone 16

Sheet Format
Notch Type: NAC

On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."

In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
