7¢ Bistre 1R27

A strong notch with the horizontal below the 'E' and the vertical in the centre of the right inner oval. There is a hint of a second vertical component at the far right of the inner oval. The left inner oval has a central guide dot touching the colour band at the far left and a faint guideline bisects the left '7'.

Leo's Notes

Notch just below the bottom of the E

  • One horizontal line, goes from the center of the oval to the right border.
  • Two vertical lines: the upper one in the centre of the oval, the lower one barely visible on the right side of the oval.
Two small dots in the right outer oval, one at the midpoint and the other just below it.Faint vertical guideline in the LNB from the lower middle part of the 7 into the bottom margin.Small guide dot in left inner oval. On the left side very close to the border.

Flaw in Zone 16
Plate Position: 1R27
Not listed in Marler
Sheet Format
Notch Type: NBC

On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."

In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
