7¢ Bistre 1R2

There is strong doubling in the right inner oval below GE. The strong notch shows the horizontal well below the 'E' and the vertical starts slightly to the right. There is a guideline at the centre of the left inner oval which extends through the right half of the left '7'.

Comments

The vertical guideline in the Left Numeral Box will aid in identification. While not discussed in his book, Marler's personal collection had additional CPVs, often with multiple examples.

Leo's Notes

Re-entry (not in Marler).

  • Doubling in the middle of the right inner oval from the right side of the G to the right side of the E.
  • Faint doubling to the left of the right frame opposite left half of the E.
Notch just below the bottom of the E
  • One horizontal member in line with first horizontal line below the E.
  • One vertical member just to the right of centre.
Guidelines
  • Vertical guideline in the left inner oval to the left of the guide dot.
  • Vertical guideline in the LNB in the right half of the 7. Goes well into the bottom margin.
Guide dot barely touching the right border of the left inner oval a bit to the right of the guideline.

Re-entry in Zone 16
Plate Position: 1R2
Not listed in Marler
Sheet Format
Notch Type: RBR

On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."

In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
