7¢ Bistre 1R15

A strong notch with the horizontal arm almost level with the bottom of the 'E' and the vertical just right of centre in the right inner oval. There is vertical guideline (which can also be seen to the left of the LNB) and a central guide dot in the left centre outer oval and another guide dot in the left inner oval.

Leo's Notes

Notch in line with the bottom of the E

  • Two horizontal members that go from the centre of the oval to the right border.
  • One vertical member – a strong line just to the right of the centre of the oval.

Guidelines

  • Vertical guideline in upper left part of the N. It is very faint except for a dot at the top.
  • Faint vertical guideline in the LNB from the right half of the 7 into the bottom margin.
Small guide dot in left inner oval. Barely touches the right border.

Flaw in Zone 16
Plate Position: 1R15
Not listed in Marler
Sheet Format
Notch Type: NER

On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."

In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
