7¢ Bistre 1L23
Impressive defective transfer in the LNB and marks in the lower arms of the 'E' which strongly resemble a notch.
Leo's Notes
Minor re-entry (not in Marler)
- a) Vertical line and horizontal line above it in the right part of the bottom arm of the E in POSTAGE plus a mark (continuation of the horizontal line?) in the middle arm. Looks like a misplaced notch. Similar flaw on 1L5, 1R7, and 2R36.
- b) Marks in the right outer oval near the left border from the E to the midpoint.
Defective transfer – LL corner
- a) The bottom line of the LNB is missing except for a small segment at the LR corner.
- b) The vertical line of the LNB is missing at the LL corner.
- c) The left frame is thin at the LL corner.
- d) The bottom frame is very thin from the LL corner to the middle of the E.
- e) The vertical line of RNB is thin at the LR corner.
Faint vertical guideline in LNB from the right edge of the 7 to the bottom. More visible on stamps than the proof.
Flaw in Zone 4
Plate Position: 1L23
Not listed in Marler
Sheet Format
Notch Type: E
On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."
In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
