7¢ Bistre 1L13

A defective transfer in the lower left.

Leo's Notes

Notch slightly above the bottom of the E.
One horizontal line sticks into oval from the right border. A mark at the end of the bottom arm of the E could be the end of the horizontal line. One vertical line difficult to distinguish because it hugs the right border.Defective transfer – LL corner
  • a) The bottom line of the LNB missing from the LL corner to the base of the 7.
  • b) The vertical line of the LNB is missing from the base of the 7 to the LL corner.
  • c) The left frame is thin at the LL corner.
  • d) The bottom frame is thin from the LL corner to the right edge of the 7.
  • e) The bottom frame is thin at the LR corner.
  • f) The right frame is thin at the LR corner.
Vertical guideline in LNB below the right edge of the 7 from a point opposite the middle of the C in CENTS into the bottom margin.

Flaw in Zone 1
Plate Position: 1L13
Not listed in Marler
Sheet Format
Notch Type: NAR

On page 374, Marler states: "In 19 Subjects of Plates 1 and 2 there is in the white band around the portrait oval, either below E or at right center, either a single line or a group of lines. Whether this is a consequence of a re-entry or not, the author cannot say, but he considers them not to be of sufficient importance to warrant describing them, particularly as many of them are much the same in their general appearance."

In an article to be published in a future issue of "The Admiral's Log", Leopold Beaudet and I suggest that these "Notch" varieties are actually quite interesting. We have found over 40 different instances and many plate positions have been determined using the plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada.
