A white area, with a strip of colour below, in the area of the King's temple.

How to explain this damage to the plate?

I would ‘offer' that a blow with a ’sharp’ edge moving from LR towards UL could have created a depression below the white space and (as is quite clear) also created the area below the white space which is filled with ink during printing. At the same time, this 'blow' pushed some of the plate metal ‘up’, creating an area where the ink was removed before printing, which would explain the white area.

  • Thick white diagonal line rising to the right on the side of the King’s head to the right of his eyebrow. 
  • Smudge below and to the left of the line.

Plate damage. 

I think this is the first instance of a significant plate flaw on any Admiral stamp appearing on a plate proof.
